One university in Virginia is on lockdown, and another has said classes are canceled as it urges students to stay inside, after threats were made to both Thursday morning.

Both schools, Virginia State University (VSU) and Hampton University, are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Neither university immediately provided details about the nature of the threat.

VSU, in Petersburg, south of Richmond, put out an alert on Thursday saying that campus is on lockdown due to "abundance of caution" to a threat they received.

"Due to a potential threat, Virginia State University is currently on lockdown," school officials wrote in an email to students and staff, WWBT reported . "All students who are on campus
