WASHINGTON — Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, are set to visit Salt Lake City on Thursday to pay respects to conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s family .

According to a person familiar with the vice president's plans, but not authorized to speak about them publicly, the Vances will visit Utah instead of New York City, which had been their planned destination for an outdoor ceremony to commemorate the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump, was shot and killed on Wednesday while speaking at a Utah college campus.

Vance and Kirk were friends and allies within Trump's political movement.
