Before quarterbacks coach Fred McNair was announced as Southern’s new play caller and co-offensive coordinator with Mark Frederick on Tuesday afternoon, he had a meeting.

McNair met with quarterback Cam’Ron McCoy that morning, and the discussion centered on his player’s performance in the team’s 30-7 loss to Alabama State three days earlier.

“I just told him, you know, we got to play a whole lot better at that position,” McNair said.

McCoy completed 14 of 29 passes for a season-high 160 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and two lost fumbles for Southern (1-2). He also rushed 11 times for 55 yards. The Jackson State transfer had consecutive lost fumbles in the third quarter that led to a field goal and touchdown in Alabama State’s 17-point run.
