KINGSTON — Buyers and sellers of small used items could be among the casualties of the ongoing trade war.

In late August, the United States government announced an end to the exemption for packages arriving in the country worth less than $800.

The de minimis tariff exemption meant lower-value shipments could enter the U.S. duty free.

“It was a bit of a shock to the system,” Dwayne Broad, a Kingston-based reseller, said of the Aug. 25 decision.

“From the seller’s perspective, we tend to examine and understand what our responsibilities are,” said Broad, who has been selling on various online platforms since the 1990s. “Quite often the customers, they never do. They just get confused and frustrated with it.”
