SAULT STE. MARIE — On the morning of Thursday, Sept. 11, Lake Superior State University staff, students, Sault community members and local first responders came together to remember the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

This year marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11, in which nearly 3,000 people were killed at the World Trade Center in New York City, at the Pentagon and aboard United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.

LSSU hosts an annual commemoration each Sept. 11 featuring speakers and the placing of wreaths in honor of the victims.

This year, the speakers included U.S. Coast Guard Capt. James Bendle. He spoke about how the attacks personally affected him and said he was motivated to remain in the Coast Guard after 9/11.
