A drug addict burglar has been jailed for at least 33 years after he attacked and inflicted "brutal" injuries on a 94-year-old man.

Paul Topham had stolen the keys which had been left in the door of Harold Monk’s sheltered accommodation in Inglewood Avenue, Wolverhampton, days before he launched an attack on the pensioner. The 46-year-old then donned a balaclava and entered his small apartment with the intention to steal from him on October 3 last year, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard on Thursday.

When the attacker was confronted by the great-grandfather during the burglary, Topham carried out what Judge Michael Chambers KC called a “brutal and sustained” attack on his victim.
