The 49ers had to move on from kicker Jake Moody .

Coach Kyle Shanahan explained why San Francisco decided to waive the three-year veteran when speaking to reporters at 49ers practice on Wednesday.

“It’s tough with a kicker,” Shanahan said. “I think Jake has a chance to have a hell of a future; he is that talented. But when it gets to that spot where it is -- we all know how last year ended -- we know how everyone was looking at him . And obviously, when it gets to that point, you could see it affect him from a mental game.

“And you don’t have much choice. You got to move on. Hopefully, [new 49ers kicker Eddy Piñeiro ] will come in and do the job .”

Moody’s inconsistency left Shanahan and San Francisco with no other option but to end their partnership. The 49ers’ No. 99 over
