CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC/NEXSTAR) – Several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were on lockdown Thursday amid reports of threats to campus safety, according to representatives from the schools.

Those schools include Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia; Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia; Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Alabama State University in Montgomery.

Some of the campuses were on lockdown, according to officials. In some cases, students were told to shelter in place until receiving notice that they could move across the campus.

Classes and campus activities at all four schools were canceled Thursday. Hampton University extended the cancelations through Friday.
