Five of the Russian drones intercepted over Poland could have been aimed at a Nato base supplying military aid to Ukraine, according to reports.

Polish and Dutch fighter jets were scrambled into the skies over allied territory late on Tuesday after Moscow launched a long-range missile and drone bombardment aimed at neighbouring Ukraine.

It soon emerged that dozens of Russian UAVs were headed for Polish airspace and were later intercepted in what became the first-ever direct engagement between Nato and Moscow.
