Residents in Los Alamos gathered Wednesday evening to protest the Department of Energy's handling of radioactive waste in the area, including a plan to vent radioactive tritium gas from storage containers at Los Alamos National Lab, expressing concerns over safety and environmental impact.
Around a dozen people protested for around five minutes at the Sala Event Center, condemning the Department of Energy for its handling of radioactive waste.
The New Mexico Environment Department stated that venting the gas is the safest option for some of the waste due to the pressurized state of the containers, which poses a risk of explosion if moved.
James Kenney, New Mexico Environment Department cabinet secretary, explained that the original plan was to move the containers to
