Global has laid off nearly four dozen workers in its newsrooms, almost entirely in B.C. and Alberta.

Jenny Yuen — a spokesperson for Unifor, which represents the Global News employees — confirmed 22 jobs have been lost in British Columbia, 23 in Alberta, and one in Global’s eastern division. Twenty-six of the positions are journalists.

“The most recent Global News layoffs are a devastating blow to local news across the country and to our democracy,” Unifor’s national president, Lana Payne, said in a statement. “We will support our members through this difficult and uncertain time.”
