NEWPORT, Ky. —

The City of Newport has announced it has formally assumed ownership of the the iconic Purple People Bridge.

In a press release, the city says it took ownership Wednesday following a unanimous vote by the Purple People Bridge Company Board of Directors at a special meeting. Advertisement

The vote "marks a new era of investment, stewardship, and regional collaboration for one of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky's most iconic landmarks," the city says.

Last month, the city announced it was working to take control over the bridge, originally built in 1872 as the Newport and Cincinnati Bridge.

The Purple People Bridge Company has owned the bridge since 2003.
