An American flag hung from the side of Long Beach’s Fire Station 1 on a gloomy Thursday morning in the city’s downtown. Police officers and firefighters stood at attention as the city observed a moment of silence — paying tribute to the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks 24 years ago.
The city commemorated the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States with a memorial ceremony on Thursday. The ceremony memorialized the 2,977 victims who died when planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., as well as the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93, who stopped their hijackers from hitting their intended target, with the plane instead crashing in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
