Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has been convicted of plotting a military coup.
The 70-year-old was found guilty by a majority of Brazilian Supreme Court judges of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the country’s 2022 election.
The plot did not go ahead but it culminated in the storming of government buildings by Bolsonaro’s supporters on 8 January 2023, a Brazilian court found.
Bolsonaro, a far-right politician, who governed Brazil between 2019 and 2022, was found guilty on five counts by three members of a five-justice panel.
One judge is left to vote and once they have done so, the panel will decide on Bolsonaro’s sentence.
Bolsonaro, who has denied any wrongdoing, is currently under house arrest and his lawyers have said they will appeal the
