KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Kalamazoo County wants proposals from service providers that are willing to manage daytime and nighttime shelters for people who are homeless during the winter.

Kalamazoo County Continuum of Care, United Way of South Central Michigan, the Kalamazoo County government and the city of Kalamazoo on Thursday put out a request for proposals winter shelters. The county says it will spend $396,000 to back projects.

Leaders expect to have as many as 160 fewer overnight shelter beds by next month, citing "changes at local shelters." County Board of Commissioners Chair Jen Strebs said that the board is trying to get ahead of the problem before the winter arrives.
