TRENTON – A recently approved bill credit program that will give state households $100 to help offset the rising cost of electricity has become the subject of an attempted scam, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has warned.
According to a statement, the NJBPU has received reports of unsolicited calls from scammers posing as utility representatives who request personal and financial information to "sign up" customers for the credit.
These calls are fraudulent attempts to steal personal information, the NJBPU said, adding that the $100 credit is automatically applied to eligible electric accounts. Customers do not need to take any action to receive it, the statement continued, adding that no legitimate representative will call customers to enroll them in this program.
