NEWFANE, N.Y. — The Niagara County Department of Health on Thursday confirmed a rabid raccoon in the Town of Newfane.

The animal was found on Lockport Olcott Road and tested positive for rabies. The raccoon entered a garage on Sept. 1, where it encountered three vaccinated dogs, the health department said in a statement.

The animal was submitted for testing to the New York State Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center, Griffin Laboratory.

The health department said it's reviewing the vaccination records of the three dogs. If their shots are current, the department will monitor them for 45 days to confirm they remain healthy.

Officials said there was no human exposure in this case.
