Educators and students woke up to a particularly somber 9/11 anniversary on Wednesday, Sept. 11 as the nation processed the shooting death of right-wing political commentator Charlie Kirk on a college campus in Utah — the same day that a school shooting in Colorado ended with the shooter taking his own life after injuring two students.

Hours after the shooting at Evergreen High School , just 20 miles from Columbine High School, where another mass shooting killed 12 students and a teacher in 1999, Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist known for expressing controversial views and a close ally of the Make America Great Again movement, died from a gunshot wound while addressing a crowd of cheering students in Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
