Ontario’s new minor league baseball stadium will be called ONT Field , it was announced last week.

Curiously, no naming-rights deal is in place for ONT Field — I’m told one is being negotiated — and naming a city-owned baseball stadium for a publicly owned airport is, well, unexpected.

But it’s logical. Ontario International Airport is the city’s most important entity, its best-known feature, a linchpin of its economic strategy. For Ontario to name its ballpark ONT Field is good marketing. As Calvin Coolidge might have said, the business of Ontario is business.

That said, my fingers were crossed for Vince’s Spaghetti Stadium.
