WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) - People gathered along the waterfront today to honor lives lost during the 9/11 attacks.
Beaufort County residents and rescue workers joined together for a memorial walk along the Pamlico River. The community prayed, then shared their experiences from September 11.
Participants walked the same distance as firefighters did when they trekked to the top of the Twin Towers, a years-long tradition that marks the somber day.
“We started about 7 years ago. I was just going to do this walk at Planet Fitness on the stair master, and then some other guys wanted to do it. One of our firefighters did it, and it wasn’t that fun staring at walls, so we decided to do it here at the waterfront. I think it should be a national holiday,” said Chocowinity Fire Department Captain M
