WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Legendary Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo was out recruiting high school players on Wednesday, and says he’s done “bitching” about the “dangers” of the Transfer Portal.

In 2025 a record-breaking number of players entered the Portal, with roughly 2700 entering before the April 22 deadline. This record number of transfers led to significant roster changes and reshaped the landscape of college basketball for the 2025-26 season.

“The transfer portal, I think is damaging the kids as much as the programs,” Izzo, a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, told NJ Advance Media in an exclusive interview while he was recruiting with his staff at Archbishop Stepinac High School. “I think kids are making decisions for all the wrong reasons.
