One of the most striking works of art in Texas, the White Shaman mural, was painted thousands of years ago on a rock wall near the Lower Pecos River. According to an archaeologist who’s studied the mural in consultation with an Indigenous group in Mexico, it tells a creation story. But according to Gary Perez, a member of the Lipan Apache Native American Church, the work is, in fact, a map of sacred sites across hundreds of miles of Texas.
