BLOOMINGTON, Ind. —
A new study finds Indiana University is the country’s worst public university for free speech.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression surveyed more than 68,000 students from 257 colleges and universities across the country.
IU Bloomington was ranked the third-worst overall for free speech protections at 255th. Down 12 places since 2024. Only two schools were worse, Columbia and Barnard College, both of which are private.
UofL came in at 39th with a grade of D, a 20-place reduction in a year. UK got an F and was ranked 182nd, down 10 places.
Eastern Kentucky ranked 9th overall and was one of only 11 schools to get a C or higher. In 2024, EKU placed 5th.
