PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) - The Battle of Plattsburgh, whose 211th anniversary is being marked this weekend in Plattsburgh, took place on land and on Lake Champlain on September 11, 1814. Also called the Battle of Lake Champlain, the skirmish was a pivotal victory that saved New York from a British invasion and turned the tide of the War of 1812.
It’s September of 1814 in Plattsburgh. American forces are at war again with Great Britain, and there are concerns of a northern invasion into New York.
North of the border, British troops, fresh off of a victory against Napoleon’s French forces, receive new orders. “You are to attack, capture, and occupy some former location on Lake Champlain. That was going to end the war,” said Keith Herkalo with the Battle of Plattsburgh Association.
