WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) - On a bright Thursday evening, the Waterbury community gathered together in Rusty Parker Memorial Park for a tournament like no other.

“It’s the 32nd annual hunt for Sunzilla: the monster sunflower. The monster sunflower is the tallest sunflower grown this year in our area,” said John Malter from the Waterbury Rotary Club.

With just under 10 entries, the competition was small but fierce. The contest started back on Arbor Day in May when elementary and middle school kids planted seeds with their parents.

Once the flowers grow into their final form, kids bring them to the park, and while the judging goes down, Malter hosts what he calls an Olympic athletic event: a sunflower spitting competition.
