BLOOMINGTON ( 25News Now ) - The McLean County Sheriff’s Department ’s license plate reading camera data was unknowingly shared with federal immigration agencies, despite violating a state law.

A data breach in Flock Safety camera software, widely used by law enforcement, recently leaked information to these agencies. The cameras are used to aid in solving crimes.

In a statement from Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley, the camera data was shared with federal agencies through pilot programs, including immigration agencies, for the purpose of combating human trafficking and fentanyl distribution.

Flock Safety has paused all pilot data sharing with federal agencies, with the CEO citing that there was a lack of protocols in the system.
