OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Today, we stop to remember one of the most tragic moments in our nation’s history.

24 years ago, terrorists knocked down New York City’s twin towers and caused chaos at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

Even the smallest towns in America join in remembrance of what happened in our country’s largest city 24 years ago today.

Around 2,000 people live in Bennington, Nebraska.

The town has a fire department of both career and volunteer firefighters.

They also have a piece of history on display from New York City’s most tragic event.

“They think it’s a beam close to one of the elevator shafts. We don’t know what tower it was, but one of the towers next to the elevator shaft is where this beam came from,” said Fire Chief Dan Mallory.
