LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - City officials, first responders and community members gathered along the lakefront Wednesday morning for the rededication of the city’s 9/11 memorial.

The upgrades to the site include a refurbished and expanded entryway, and new work on the Ribbon of Souls — a mosaic featuring a glass piece for each life lost in the Sept. 11 attacks. Repairs were also made to the structure of the memorial.

While the physical improvements were celebrated, city leaders said the ceremony was also about honoring sacrifice and remembering what the memorial represents.

Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell said the rededication is a reminder of the commitment first responders make every day.
