Prime Minister Mark Carney’s initial list of five “nation-building” major projects Ottawa is willing to fast-track includes two B.C. proposals that are at the top of Premier David Eby’s list of priorities for diversifying trade away from U.S. dependence.

Those are the Phase-2 expansion of LNG Canada’s liquefied natural gas plant in Kitimat, which Carney said would “directly help transform our country into an energy superpower,” and a major extension of the Red Chris copper-and-gold mine in the far northwest.

“What made these projects stand out is they were advanced in their consultation processes, which is something we said was going to be very important to us,” Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said. “They had strong proponents, which means they have a high likelihood of execution.
