PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — Portland schools say a parent was stopped and detained Thursday morning while dropping off their student.
It happened around 8 a.m. at Gerald E. Talbot Community School in the Riverton neighborhood.
In a letter Thursday night, school leaders say unidentified law enforcement agents with vests marked “police,” in unmarked vehicles, detained the parent.
A school administrator approached the officers, but they refused to identify themselves or their agency.
Portland police later confirmed they were not involved.
In the letter home, school leaders mentioned district protocols should ICE agents arrive at any schools, while repeating they don’t know who the officers were.
