HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It’s been more than 80 years since the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.
Now a salvage crew is hard at work to preserve and protect the USS Arizona and the memorial structure above.
From the surface near Ford Island, it’s easy to see the floating construction site, complete with a large crane and other construction equipment.
Underneath the surface, Navy divers installed mooring anchors and containment buoys around the USS Arizona Memorial to assist with removal of two mooring platforms constructed on the hull of the sunken battleship.
“In December of 2023, one of the platforms started to collapse into the deck of the Arizona, so our goal is to remove those concrete platforms, preserve the structure of the Arizona, and prevent any future damage to the structur
