FARGO — North Dakota leaders are responding to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, raising questions about political violence and the role of social media in escalating tensions.

Kirk was shot and killed Wednesday, Sept. 10, at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University.

Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., said he and his colleagues in Congress fear retaliation and further violence. "Our heads are on a swivel. We feel less safe," Cramer said.

Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., said the rise in political violence stems in part from behavior on social media. "I do think that social media plays a role. I think that can become impersonal and that people say things and post things that they wouldn't do to each other in person," Hoeven said.
