More than 120 motorists on Mid West roads have been caught red-handed with mobile phone and seatbelt offences each week since a new high-tech camera trailer was rolled out.

Figures show 1229 caution notices were issued in the Mid West since June 30, when the new AI camera trailer started operating on local roads — the equivalent of 123 drivers every week, or more than 17 every day.

Of the total cautions, 361 were for drivers holding their mobiles in their hands, 395 were for other mobile phone-related offences, 206 were to do with using seatbelts incorrectly and 267 were for no seatbelts being used.
