NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. — Several vigils were held across the nation Thursday night to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot Wednesday while speaking at a university event in Utah.

On the First Coast, hundreds gathered at Jarboe Park in Neptune Beach to pay tribute to Kirk's life during a candlelight vigil filled with prayer.

The Turning Point USA founder was killed at Utah Valley University during a live debate event.

Luna Nicodeme, a University of North Florida student who attended the vigil called it heartbreaking.

“We’re all still here left with the mourning of his loss and everyone we lost on 9/11, 24 years ago," she said. "It’s just a sad day.”

Charles Barr, chairman of the Duval County Republican Party, called Kirk a once in a lifetime person.
