GRAND MARAIS, Minn. (Northern News Now) - Three years ago this month, the Grand Marais Auxiliary U.S. Coast Guard station closed for good.
It had been used for a century as a launching point for Lake Superior rescues.
The Coast Guard decided there wasn’t enough staffing or need.
In the years since its closure, lawmakers have called for its reopening in the wake of several drownings and water emergencies.
The station remains closed.
However, the void created by the closure of the Coast Guard’s historic building will soon be filled by a historic partnership.
Hiking up the cliffs at Black Beach in Silver Bay is no easy task.
But for BethAnn Henning, standing at the top is the hardest part.
On a sunny August day, Henning stands atop a cliff, talking to a cross that serves as a memorial
