LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

City leaders are pushing for more action to deter youth violence in Louisville, with some Metro Council members calling for the swift reopening of the Jefferson County Juvenile Detention Center, which has been closed since 2019 due to financial issues.

“Crime is everywhere — East End, West End, but we do know that it is predominantly the youth that is committing a lot of these crimes,” said Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins.

She added that many residents have expressed fear, while some young people believe there are few consequences for serious offenses.

“I’ve been having a lot of my community members say, ‘Hey, we’re scared,’ and of course, you have youth that say, ‘Oh, I’m just going to get a slap on the wrist,’ or ‘Oh, there’s nowhere for me to go,’” she said.
