MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) - Battell Park on Mishawaka Avenue served as the venue for another 9/11 tribute in Michiana on Thursday evening.
Team Red, White and Blue — dedicated to enriching the lives of our veterans — teamed up with Elevate Training for this event as a tribute to the heroes of 9/11.
On that long-ago September day, firefighters climbed 2,200 steps in an effort to save people trapped in the Twin Towers after terrorists flew two jetliners into the landmarks.
We found participants donning turnout gear and carrying up to 70 pounds as the heroes did 24 years ago before running 2,200 steps.
“This is our way to show that we will never forget, so the 2,200 steps today is in memorial for each person that we lost that day in New York,” said Christina Plummer, an event organizer.
