SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Battell Park on Mishawaka Avenue in South Bend served as the venue for another 9/11 tribute Thursday evening.
Team Red, White and Blue, dedicated to enriching the lives of our veterans, teamed up with Elevate Training for this event as a tribute to the heroes of 9/11.
On that long-ago September day firefighters climbed 220 steps in an effort to save people trapped in the Twin Towers after terrorists flew two jetliners into the landmarks.
We found participants Thursday donning turnout gear and carrying up to 70 pounds as the heroes did 24 years ago before running 220 steps.
“This is our way to show that we will never forget so the 222 steps today is in memorial for each person that we lost that day in New York,” said Christina Plummer an event organizer.
