Fort Wayne area leaders joined countless others who have expressed shock and condemned violence that could be politically motivated after conservative active Charlie Kirk was shot dead on a college campus.

The Wednesday slaying of Kirk on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem occurred as the 31-year-old was addressing a crowd and taking questions about gun violence and mass shootings.

"Charlie was the most outspoken defender of free speech and open debate of his generation, and to see him gunned down for his speech is a horror beyond words," a statement from Lana Keesling, chairwoman of the Indiana Republican State Committee, said today.
