UNIVERSITY CITY — Teddy Stephens memorized the script from front to back.
So the University City High sophomore quarterback was taken by surprise by a late change of plans Thursday night.
University City football coach Will Franklin had scripted the first 10 offensive plays prior to the contest against Fort Zumwalt East.
At the last minute, Franklin tossed that plan out the window.
"Not sure why," Stephens said. "But I'm glad he did."
University City abandoned a pre-planned running attack and came out throwing in the nonleague affair at Muhl Schemmer Stadium.
The early air salvo helped University City hold off Fort Zumwalt East 39-34 in a wild affair that came down to the closing seconds.
Stephens hit on 10 of 20 passes for 148 yards and five touchdowns.
