TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — It has been 24 years since the 9/11 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. To honor and remember the tragic day in our nation’s history, people from all over the Valley gathered at the Tempe Healing Field on Thursday.

A flag is on display for each victim, showing their name and their story. For some, it was their very first time paying their respects in the United States.

“We always hear about it in the news back home in Zimbabwe. We would hear about the 9/11. We’re getting here, experiencing the flags, seeing all the people they are commemorating, I feel (emotional),” said ASU international student Tanaka Chikuriuwo.

For others, it is a tough day with a personal connection.
