One of my aggravating moments is when I read in a newspaper, or hear on a television newscast, the total misuse of the words “democracy” (noun), democratic (adjective), and Democrat (proper noun). How has our language become so misunderstood as to not know how to use these two nouns and one adjective in writing or speaking?
A case in point, and the subject of my letter: In the last paragraph of a George F. Will commentary that ran in The Plain Dealer July 18 (“As Kentucky Democrat Andy Beshear eyes 2028, he’ll need to deal with ‘the groups’“), Will tells us that “Kentucky ... is a laboratory for learning to speak Middle American, a skill that has atrophied in a Democratic Party.” There is nothing “democratic” about today’s Democrat Party.
