LAKE ELSINORE — At first glance, Temescal Canyon’s 33-10 loss at Patriot at home Thursday looks like a disappointment. But the Titans’ second-year coach, Derek Hill, sees a blueprint for his young team’s future.

The Titans feature just five returning starters from last year’s squad, which finished 5-4 and narrowly missed qualifying for the CIF Southern Section Division 10 playoffs. Eighteen sophomores are on the roster.

In contrast, Patriot has four sophomores on its roster and boasts a veteran offensive line that, though small in stature, is quick and sturdy in pushing around the defense.

Led by senior linemen Joseph Sanchez, Jason Avalos, Andrew Chavez and Victor Ramirez, the Warriors rushed for 317 yards and five touchdowns on 31 carries, averaging 10.2 yards per rush.
