US President Donald Trump has described Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as a “good man” in his first public comments about a phone call between the two leaders last week.

The American leader made the brief but significant remark outside the White House today when asked about his conversation with the Australian Prime Minister.

“He’s a good man,” Trump said in just four words before boarding his helicopter.

The endorsement comes as Albanese remains under pressure to prove his ability to reach the leader of the free world, with a high-stakes meeting still on the line.

The Prime Minister is still waiting in hope of securing a face-to-face meeting with Trump in New York later this month.
