The fireworks of the infamous Oval Office showdown between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald J. Trump back in February were so spectacular people tend to forget the spark that lit it up.

Ukraine’s president was apparently expected to just nod and agree with whatever nonsense Trump and his supplicants felt like spewing at the moment, but Zelensky has proven over the past three-plus years he’s not the rollover type. When U.S. Vice President JD Vance argued for diplomacy regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelensky provided a history lesson.

Remember, this is a guy whose country had been going toe-to-toe with Putin for more than a decade, and experienced first-hand the Russian leader’s pattern of broken promises.
