The Hialeah City Council failed to pass a budget during Thursday's meeting after disagreeing over the best way to provide financial relief to its residents.

The mayor of Hialeah presented a budget in which the city would absorb the increased cost of water and slightly reduce property taxes, but the plan did not receive the support it needed in order to pass.

The issue at hand: the millage rate, or the rate used to calculate property taxes.

The mayor wants to reduce the millage rate by a percentage point, but three council members voted against, meaning the vote is split 3-3.

The Council cannot approve the budget without first establishing the millage rate. They'll come together again on Monday for another vote.
