Two Leicestershire MPs are seeking to overturn a decision to strip back this year’s Diwali celebrations in Leicester. The annual festival, one of the largest Diwali celebrations outside of India, is set to be dramatically reduced for 2025.
Safety fears have prompted the decision to cut back the event to just the lights along Belgrave Road and the wheel of light. This means there will be no fireworks nor stage entertainment, and Cossington Street Recreation Ground will not be used for this year's celebrations at all . The recreation ground previously was the location for the main stage and the Diwali Village with its food stalls, funfair rides, fashion and arts, as well as the annual fire garden.
