Charlie Kirk's comments on Canadian politics have gained renewed attention following his assassination on Wednesday during a speech at Utah Valley University. A video from nearly a year ago has gone viral, showing Kirk responding to a question from a college student from Alberta. The student asked, "What would you do if you were Prime Minister of Canada right now?"
Kirk replied, "I would deport Justin Trudeau the first day. That guy sucks." He then elaborated on his views about Canada, stating, "Canada’s a real problem, man. I would basically allow Alberta to become its own country. The two best parts of Canada are Edmonton and Calgary. Beautiful country, too, it’s amazing. Canada is a really screwed up country and it is a self-hating country, as you well know, that prides itself on being polite."
He continued, emphasizing that Canada’s politeness could be detrimental. "This is a great lesson for those of us from the West that your favorable characteristics of being polite, nice and welcoming can also be your downfall. You know that in Canada, right?" As the student nodded, Kirk criticized Canada's immigration policies and lack of free speech protections, saying, "Canada does not have the (American) constitution, so you do not have robust free speech protections and you do not have second amendment protections. So the government is able to do whatever they want. I wouldn’t want to be prime minister of Canada; I wouldn’t last very long."
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, described Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver as some of the most liberal cities globally. He expressed concern over Canada's immigration plans, stating, "Canada is bringing in half of its population in the next decade from immigrants. It’s just not sustainable and it’s too bad; it was a once great country. Canada has fallen."
Kirk had previously cheered Trudeau's announcement of stepping down in January, tweeting, "Make Canada Great Again." He also mocked Trudeau's assertion that Canada would never become the 51st state, saying, "Mr. Trudeau, when you’re playing defense, you’re already losing!"
Following Kirk's death, podcast host Joe Rogan praised him for encouraging open debate. Rogan remarked, "There’s going to be a lot of people celebrating this. It’s so scary. It’s so dangerous too, to celebrate or to in any way encourage this kind of behavior from human beings. He’s not a violent guy. He was talking to people on college campuses."
In a live interview, former President Donald Trump confirmed that the suspect in Kirk’s assassination had been apprehended. Trump stated, "With a high degree of certainty, we have him. He wanted to help young people, and he didn’t deserve this. He was really a good person."
Kirk's comments and his untimely death have sparked discussions among his supporters, with many expressing agreement with his views on Canada.
