KARNS, Tenn. (WATE) — In 1999, 10-year-old Herman Lathers woke at his grandmother's house and found that he couldn't move.

His grandmother quickly called 911, and a fire truck arrived to escort him to the hospital. He was terrified, but the cool confidence of the firefighters put him at ease. Ever since that day, he wanted to be one of them.

Lathers did eventually achieve his goal of becoming a firefighter, but before that, he got a chance to do what so many dream about—playing for the University of Tennessee Volunteers football team.
