STANTON, Neb. (KTIV) - A new law in Nebraska raised speeding fines starting Sept. 3, but that isn’t slowing down some drivers.
On Wednesday, Sept. 10, the Stanton County Sheriff’s Office clocked a speeding car at 118 mph in a 65 mph zone. The vehicle was travelling northbound on Highway 57 five miles south of Stanton.
The 18-year-old driver was more than 50 mph over the speed limit, which incurs a $400 fine under a new law, LB350. The new law raised speeding fines after the state experienced a surge of high-speed cases .
“These speeds on our highways are just a split second from causing catastrophic results that often take the innocent. Please consider the consequences before tragedy does happen again,” stated Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger.
